SUQUAMISH TRIBAL DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAM. - THE SPECIAL DIABETES PROGRAM ACTIVELY WORKS TOWARDS PREVENTING OR DELAYING THE ONSET OF TYPE II DIABETES IN SUQUAMISH TRIBAL MEMBERS. THE PROGRAM IS RUN BY THE SUQUAMISH TRIBE'S COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSE. THE TRIBE HAS A LARGE POPULATION OF SMOKERS AND IDENTIFIES THE SCREENING OF TOBACCO USE IN PEOPLE WITH DIABETES AS A NEED. SCREENING FOR THE USE OF TOBACCO WILL TAKE PLACE AT A VARIETY OF COMMUNITY EVENTS/PROGRAMS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. CESSATION COUNSELING AND NICOTINE REPLACEMENT THERAPY WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR INTERESTED TRIBAL MEMBERS AFTER THE SCREENINGS HAVE BEEN COMPLETED AND INDIVIDUAL NEEDS ARE ASSESSED. THE SPECIAL DIABETES PROGRAM WILL ALSO HAVE HEALTH EDUCATION ACTIVITIES FOR THE COMMUNITY WHICH WILL INCLUDE WISDOM WARRIORS (STANFORD CHRONIC DISEASE SELF-MANAGEMENT), ANNUAL HEALTH FAIR, AND INTER-ACTIVE INFORMATION BOOTHS AT COMMUNITY EVENTS, IF PANDEMIC RESTRICTIONS PERMIT. THE SPECIAL DIABETES PROGRAM ALSO WORKS CLOSELY WITH THE TRIBE'S TRADITIONAL FOODS PROGRAM TO DISTRIBUTE FOOD, MEDICINE AND PLANTS THAT HAVE BEEN USED HISTORICALLY BY SUQUAMISH PEOPLE TO HEAL AND NOURISH THEM.
