Award detail

THE MPTN HAS THE GOAL OF BEING ABLE TO OPERATE ITS POWER GRID AUTONOMOUSLY DURING EMERGENCY SITUATIONS. CURRENTLY WHEN SERVICES FAIL DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER OR OTHER ISSUES THE MPTN RESERVATION IS AT THE END OF THE LINE OF CUSTOMERS THAT THE SERVICING UTILITY PRIORITIZES FOR REPAIRS. THIS RESULTS IN LONGER PERIODS OF OUTAGE FOR RESERVATION RESIDENTS PUTTING MEMBERS WITH ELECTRICITYDEPENDENT HEALTH CONCERNS SUCH AS BREATHING EQUIPMENT OR REFRIGERATED MEDICATIONS AT ELEVATED RISK. AFTER THE COMPLETION OF THE PROPOSED ISLAND POWER CONCEPT EVALUATION THE TRIBE WILL BE FURNISHED WITH THE KNOWLEDGE OF WHAT RESOURCES AND CHANGES WOULD BE REQUIRED IN ORDER TO IMPLEMENT ISLANDING OPERATIONS. IF THE STUDY DETERMINES THAT AUTONOMOUS OPERATIONS ARE VIABLE IT WILL OPEN THE DOOR FOR THE TRIBE TO POTENTIALLY IMPLEMENT THE NECESSARY CHANGES INCREASING TRIBAL AUTONOMY AND SECURING GREATER HOUSEHOLD SAFETY FOR RESERVATION RESIDENTS. WHILE THIS IS ONLY THE INCEPTION PHASE OF REALIZING THE LONGHELD GOAL OF ISLANDING OPERATIONS IT IS ALSO AN INDISPENSABLE PHASE. IT IS ANTICIPATED THAT THIS CONCEPT EVALUATION WILL BE COMPLETED WITHIN ONE YEAR.
